The search for the Ark of the Covenant has been going on for centuries. Explorers, political leaders and scholars sought out the elusive artifact; even Adolf Hitler, Napoleon, and Mussolini made it a high priority. Even with tremendous resources exhausted, the Ark of God still eludes men today.
Many believe the Ark was hidden in a cave just prior to the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar in 587/6 BC. Others believe it was destroyed, and thus lost forever. Biblical references to the Ark stopped during this time of turbulence for the Jewish nation. One reference centuries later in the 1st century A.D. from the author of Hebrews mentions the artifact in his description of the tabernacle. (Heb. 9:5) “of these things we cannot now speak in detail”.
The Prophet Jeremiah seems to suggest that the Ark, though hidden away, would still exist in the future. “And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, the ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it, neither shall they visit it, neither shall that be done any more” (Jer. 3:16).
The Scriptures are oddly silent as to its location once it vanishes during the time of Jeremiah the prophet (about 600 BC). Historical sources suggest it wasn’t in the Temple during the time of Christ, or during the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD. Just where did the Ark of the Covenant go? What could have happened to it? Did the Babylonians just destroy it? Was Jeremiah the prophet at the time of its disappearance instructed to hide it? Was it eventually found by the Knights Templar to be hidden out of harm’s way centuries later? Is it just hidden away for some future expedition to stumble upon? All relevant questions, asked for centuries by numerous scholars and explorers.
Most involved in the search, however, have never considered the secret that the Ark reveals, is there a “God reason” for its hiding place? There is a mystery that if correctly understood, may unlock the Ark’s final resting place.
